10 Most Common Growing Marijuana Mistakes

Growing marijuana is not easy. It takes years of practice to be able to grow a potent sticky bud. However there are some common mistakes that majority of rookie as well as some experienced cannabis growers still make. We have put together a list of 10 common growing marijuana mistakes and advise how to avoid them. Are you guilty of any of them? Share below!

1. Don’t Over Water Your Marijuana Plant

Over watering kills marijuana plants. Water once the top few inches of the soil dry out.  Hydroponics is harder to over water because rockwool has such excellent drainage properties. As long as the rockwool cubes are not sitting in liquid it is virtually impossible to over water a hydroponic setup. A hydroponic setup could either be watered constantly as the drip method, or once to three times a day as in the flood and drain method.

2. Don’t Tell People You Grow Weed.

Seriously. Just don’t. Why? They will only be jealous. People love to feel important and that is why they will tell other people; because others will listen to them. Keep it to yourself. This is one of the most common reasons for being caught, so again – don’t tell anyone!

3. Touch/Kill Germinating Seeds

Please have some patience. It sometimes takes 10 days for a seed to sprout. The paper towel method is not recommended because you must handle the seeds when transferring them from the paper towel to your growing medium.

4. Grow Seeds From Seeded Marijuana

One of the greatest disappointments known to the growing man. 90% of what the final product will be is in the seed’s genetics and has little to do with the environment the plant is grown in. Many get their hands on the seed and think they have a gold mine. They will probably grow something like this: hermaphrodites, tall late flowering females coupled with early flowering males. This is because the only pollen that could have produced the seed was from a hermaphrodite or a very stunted and late flowering male the grower did not notice.

Unless you are prepared for possible disappointment don’t use “unknown” seeds. This is why people buy seeds from seedbanks.

5. Don’t Over Fertilize

Fertilize after first 2 spiked leaves appear. Follow the label. DON’T FERTILIZE EVERY TIME YOU WATER!!!

Start with 25% and work your way up! Leach the plants with lots of pure water every 2-4 weeks. Organic marijuana growing is recommended. It tastes better and burns much better. If the leaves suddenly twist or fold under, Leach and Spray with pure water for several days!

6. Don’t Under Fertilize

Under fertilizing is less common but it happens. If you are one of those people that likes to give the plant just enough nutrients make sure you use a organic soil mixture with blood meal and bone meal or some slow release fertilizer with micro nutrients.

7. Don’t Start With Clones

Start with seeds. Bugs are a pain, So are plant diseases. Many growers are able to grow indoors without pest problems for years. If they do get pests they are probably not enjoying the change from their usual diet to marijuana resin! But as soon as you come in contact with others grow material (cuttings) it is almost guaranteed that its from a long time grower that has many different pests all eating marijuana and bug spray (and surviving) for hundreds of generations!… Think about it.
(I personally don’t agree with this, I use clones and cuttings.)

8. Don’t Start Too Early Inside or Outdoors

For several reasons! If you are starting outdoors June 1 is perfect. But if I start earlier I will get bigger buds right? Probably Wrong!

It’s strange but usually true. Let me explain. Plants started in early spring will get big but they will take significantly longer to start flowering. This is because at the peak vegetative period they sense the light cycles getting longer and longer, until June 21. But they don’t realize that its time to flower yet. Finally in the middle of August the plant says “HEY, time to flower already” and it produces buds in August and September or later they will be tall as trees but thinner buds due to the fact that the sun is not as strong in September. Now if the ganja plants were put out later, as soon as they get a foot off the ground they say “what’s going on” I am just in early veggie and the light hours aren’t getting longer in fact SHORTER”. Then the plants go crazy and since the sun is so bright in July and August you get amazing 6 foot trees that are heavier than the plants started in April!!! In addition to finishing earlier the late started plants are not nearly as noticeable.

Indoors is the same for different reasons. The light cannot penetrate more than a foot or two. So flower when plants are a foot tall. If you wait longer because you want bigger yields, you will get smaller yields and wait longer for them.

9. Don’t Provide A Bad Environment

Always provide air circulation and fresh air even during the night cycle is fine. All the air indoors should be replaced every 5-10 minutes. Humidity between 30-70% temp aim for around 75-85′ Even seedlings need a gentle fan to strengthen the stems.

10. Don’t Harvest Too Early

I know it’s hard. You see the buds and resin forming at a rapid rate. The buds are potent and you feel tempted to chop’em down! The only problem is that another 25% of the weight will form in 2 more weeks. Wait until the plants have totally stopped growing and the white pistils are at least 50-75% brown.

*NOTE: Outdoors if security is a factor make your own call on when to sacrifice the fields. Also take buds continuously in case of thieves.

Put her under 24 hour lighting this will put it back into veg (reveg)

      Reply
    • Either harvest soon or let them re-veg. No problem letting them veg again unless you have to quit growing at a certain time.

It will definitely help to chop the lower stems off but make sure not to get chop happy…The leafs are what are producing your plants food (sugar). Chopping of some of the lower stems will also help focus the plants energy into the top part of your plant. This is where you will get most of your big buds from. Also you do not need to change you watering cycle, just stick to the same regiment you had while in vegetation. I take it you are growing outdoors from the size of your plants but it wouldn’t hurt to add some nutrients that are magnesium and potassium rich. This will help with the flowering. Good luck and enjoy

  4. Hello I’m a new grower, I have 2 plants white widow that I started from seed in side for about 2 months, they grew about 3 ft tall and summer just started and I planted them out side thinking that they will keep growing in veg and get very big, but I found that they started to flower and I still have 3 months until they are supposed to come down, will the plants keep growing in flower or will they re veg, also will my plants turn into herms and be worthless. Or will the seeds they produce be germinated? I’m stuck and need help.

I am a Disabled Veteran who suffers from Severe PTSD and I am a second year grower. Thus, I have already made a few mistakes, as I planted in April. Furthermore, I have a problem with my plants wanting to turn yellow. I had no problems with them until I was told to give them rain water as I have them in a greenhouse. I didn’t PH my rain water and I believe that this is where my problems began. Also, I believe that my wife was giving them to much water. Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue? Any and all help welcomed. Peace.

Travis let them dry, their root systems will seek out more water making the plant able to hold weighted bud better and gather more nutes, the next feeding give them water and bone meal or a tea of earthworm castings for a nitrogen boost, good luck with the grow

Themomma- you need a fan on that plant at all times if it is humid, especially in late bud. I would see if you could.ventilate the room better and buy seeds, fem or auto if you are looking for easy seed or tga, raredankness, or cali connection all good seed companies. What light are you using?

Hi Mike, those flouresents aren’t really the best for growing under. You’d probably be ok for the vegatative stage but for flowering you need a red light spectrum with those floros are not going to have. We recommend getting red spectrum leds if you’re worried about heat- or if heat isn’t a factor then the hps lights specifically for flowering, something like grolux will work the best. No point growing under the wrong lighting!

I started my plants a little early. They got white hairs but small buds they are 15 FEMALES from 6-8 foot tall. Will pinching the SMALL BUDS will make them swell? I trimmed a lot of water leaves off. Will doing that hurt the plants?

    Reply
    • Green Man

Do you mean fan leaves when you say ‘water leaves’? If so, you should NOT be trimming those off. The fan leaves take the energy from the lights and convert it to food for the plant through photosynthesis, by clipping these leaves off you may think you’re giving the buds more light but in reality what you are doing is starving them. Please let your plants grow new leaves and don’t trim them any more; give the plants time to grow and the buds to swell.

  18. I planted my babies in late may outdoors. It was just some bag seed that i stumbled upon. I got some 1 gallon pots put some yard dirt in them planted the seeds 1″ deep watered and have made sure they stayed moist at all times. It is now 9/11 and my girl have been floweringfor 3 weeks. I pollenated them all with one male so i could get more seed. I have a full time job and dont have alot of time and my plants look and smell great. People tend to make growing alot harder than it is. Just put seeds in dirt water and let nature take its course. Stop being impatient and watch your babies do what they do naturally. When it looks like bud you want to smoke chop her down and let her dry a bit. Then smoke and have fun. Peace children.

My advice to all is to do lots of research and read, read, read! Growing medical cannabis is a never ending learning process so the more you educate yourself with how the plant grows and performs during its different cycles the better grower you can be. Also learn from your mistakes. Some of the best growers in the world are self taught by this method. Happy growing to all!

  22. Hi guys I have a plant that I have been growing ! for About 7 months now and it started budding and my wife picked some leafs off it now it seems like it stoped budding and started growing weird leafs all over it there like along stem with a flat. What should I do I have it on a 24/24 light cycle

    Reply
    • Green Man

That sounds really odd. First of all there is no reason to grow a plant for 7 months that is much much longer than the longest lifecycle you will encounter. To get a plant to bud you MUST have it on a 12/12 light cycle; (unless its autoflowering) 18/24 and 24/24 is for vegatative growth only! That is probably why it is so wierd. You’ve grown it for far far to long in vegetative state and now it is stressed and seemingly wanting to bud but can’t because your light cycle is completely wrong!
